I attended the Leeds Pride 2017 event in August to take some images from the day for Unite the union. What I try to cover at these events is; the people, the context and then the event itself. I started off by wandering round the main event which was held in Millennium Square. This is where people gather to watch various artists perform or to show off their costumes if they have dressed up so I just look for interesting subjects. I managed to get a few good images of Davina with her wings.
I have put together some of the images from the day in the video below.
The focus then lead on to the parade that made its way through Leeds city centre. I try to get a few set up shots before the parade starts as its very difficult to organise anything once people start walking. I managed to get to the front of the parade as it set off to get a few context shots.
This year a group of anarchists hijacked this position to make a political statement about police brutality. I was the only photographer there and managed to get some images before their flares were confiscated by security.
When I am covering this type of event I don’t just concentrate on the parade. I try to get amongst the crowd to find good subjects for images and also at people watching the event that look interesting, like the woman with the Jeremy Corbyn cutout.
